These cute and fragrant ornaments are fun to make - great activity for the kids or grandkids! I buy the big applesauce and cinnamon containers at my club store or dollar store. I figured out the trick to rolling them out nicely. I've included all my tips in the recipe below. Makes about 20 ornaments depending on size you make.
Note: I mixed mine in my stand mixer with a flex edge beater. But you can mix together by hand.
Mix together applesauce and cinnamon to form dough and let rest 30 min.
Lay a silicone baking mat or large piece of parchment paper on your counter, place about half the dough down. Lay a piece of plastic wrap over top and roll the dough to about a 1/4" thickness.
Cut out shapes with cookie cutters. Re-roll the scraps of dough.
Use a very thin spatula to carefully move the shapes to your lined baking sheet.
Poke a hole with a straw or skewer.
Bake 200 degrees for 2 hours, turn over once during baking. Leave in oven once turned off until fully dry. (Or can let air dry on a cooking rack) They do shrink up a bit while drying.
