Sweet Potato and Banana “Barkies” (Dog Cookies) Recipe
Homemade Dog Cookies with sweet potato and banana! You can bake these to whatever size and texture your dog prefers: chewy or crunchy!

Servings: 30 Dog Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 3/4 cups old fashioned rolled oats divided
- 1/2 medium banana
- 1 cup cooked sweet potato see note
- 1 large egg
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or grease baking sheet.
- Place 1 ½ cups of the oats in chopper, small food processor or blender. Process until ground to a flour texture.
- Mix together banana, sweet potato and egg in mixer. (I used stand mixer with flat beater, could also use hand mixer or food processor.)
- Mix in the oat flour and the remaining ¼ cup of (unground) oats.
- Scoop 1-2 tablespoon portions and roll into balls.
- Flatten with the tines of a fork in a criss-cross pattern or use the rounded end of a wooden spoon to make paw-prints.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes for a softer center.
- Let cool on baking sheet.
- Store in air-tight container in refrigerator or in freezer for longer.
Notes
I microwave a medium-sized sweet potato (pricked 4-5 times with fork) for 5-6 minutes or until tender. Allow to cool until just warm or room temperature. Cut in half and scoop sweet potato out of skin. (discard skin.)

You mention Oat flour and remaining oats, not sure what you mean by oat flour?
Hi Tania! You make the oat flour yourself, by grinding some of the oats in a blender, food processor or chopper. You could alternatively buy already made oat flour. All the directions are in the recipe instructions. Thanks for reaching out! Take Care!

Hi Katie – I haven’t tried that yet myself – but as long as your dog can have those ingredients you could give it a shot. You may have to play around a little bit with the texture as you’ll be changing up the flour and the texture may be different. Let us know how it goes!
Can I used canned sweet potatoes
Some of them are packed in sugary syrup – I think if you can find ones without added sugar – that would work.
My dogs love these treats! I had some tapioca flour kicking around so used that instead of grinding the oatmeal. Worked fine and my dogs didn’t complain! I have a heart shaped silicone mold I used. Keep the treats in the freezer, takes them longer to chew that way! I have two happy labs!

What temp should they be to be considered fully cooked? I had dough left over & put them in before the oven reached 350 degrees .

Hard to say exactly – depends if you want them fully hard or softer for your dog. Maybe take one out and let it cool a bit and check to see if you like the texture.
These sound awesome! But I’d like to know how long they last.. a few days or up to 2 weeks? Does anybody know?

Hi Stephanie – It depends a bit on how much/hard you bake them. If they’re on the softer side, they should probably be refrigerated or frozen. For homemade treats in general, since they don’t have preservatives… I usually freeze them and just take out what I want for a day or so. They’re small and thaw on the counter very quickly. Hope that helps!
