Whiskers will be twitching for these easy-to-make cat treats! meow!

All you need are 4 simple ingredients: Pumpkin, salmon, egg, oat flour.

This pouch of boneless, skinless salmon was super handy! I minced it up a little finer with my chopper.

You can buy oat flour or make it yourself! Just grind “Old Fashioned” rolled oats in your blender, chopper or food processor.

Mix to form a nice dough. Sprinkle with a little extra oat flour and pat it out about 1/4″ thick.

Dock all over with a fork – will help release moisture while baking.

Bake for 15 minutes, then take out of the oven and cut into “bits” – mine were about 1 centimeter square. A pizza or pastry wheel tackles this task easily!

Spread the bits back out on the baking sheet and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes. Let them cool completely, store in a jar in the refrigerator for up to a week or in the freezer for longer.

Prep Time: 10 minutes minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes minutes
Servings: 2 cups treats

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups oat flour (see notes to make your own) divided
  • 5 ounces boneless skinless salmon (can or pouch) drained
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Break the salmon up with a fork or in a chopper or blender.
  • Combine 1 cup oat flour, salmon, egg and pumpkin puree in bowl. Use spoon or electric mixer to combine into a dough.
  • Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, sprinkle with some additional oat flour and pat down to about 1/4 inch thick. Dock (prick) all over with a fork. (will help release moisture while baking.)
  • Bake for 15 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and use pizza or pastry cutter to cut into small "bits" - mine were about 1 cm x 1 cm.
  • Spread the bits out and bake for another 15 - 20 minutes or until firm. Let cool completely. Transfer to air-tight container and store in refrigerator for 1-week or freeze for longer.

Notes

Oat Flour:  You can easily make your own oat flour by grinding "Old Fashioned" rolled oats in a blender, chopper or food process

I’m guessing you could probably sub it out for chicken as long as it’s in water. Either boil some chicken breast and shredded up or they do sell canned chicken like tuna fish but chicken instead. Just make sure again it’s not in oil but is in water. There is some types of oil that is safe for cats but not all. So it’s always just better to air on the safe side.

I made a batch of these to give to my cousin’s cat for Valentines day. I haven’t gave them to her yet, but my 2 cats and even my dog really liked these!! I gave them each a sample. 🙂 So I’m sure my cousin’s kitty will love them! Thanks for a great recipe!

The egg helps hold the mixture together. I’m not sure what a substitute would be. If it were me, I’d try it without the egg and just add extra pumpkin or a little water if it needs more moisture (to replace the egg).

I’ve had good luck in other things substituting apple sauce for the eggs. Just use the no sugar added kind. You may need to adjust the amount of flour, depending upon how wet the dough is.

Can you use corn meal ? Also why remove the skin and bones , I have canned salon on hand. It has the skin and bones. I eat it all when I make salmon patties. Wouldn’t the skin and bones be good for the cat or is there a reason I don’t know about? How long will these keep in the frig?

You can use whatever ingredients your kitty is allowed to have! For the cornmeal – it may affect the texture. oat flour is pretty finely textured.

I would say you can use whatever flour your cat is allowed to have – you can check with your vet to make sure. Take care!
