Packed full of Protein – Delicious Sweet Treat!

We always had cottage cheese in our refrigerator growing up. I remember the pink and white striped container – it was called “Calorie Counters” or something like that – anyway – I’ve always been a cottage cheese fan. Lately though, cottage cheese has really been having its day in all kinds of recipes as a way to add more protein to your diet – like this Cottage Cheese Chocolate Pudding Recipe!

Whipped cottage cheese (simply smoothing cottage cheese using a food processor, blender or chopper) Is a great protein-filled base ingredient to add to many recipes such as pancakes, pasta, dips, overnight oats and more! Whipped cottage cheese is also the starting point for the viral cottage cheese chocolate pudding trend!

I made some of the viral cottage cheese chocolate puddings I saw on social media – some were not good at all – But with some research, testing & tweaking, I finally have a recipe good enough to share! It’s pretty simple with just 5 ingredients and a food processor, you too can enjoy a delicious sweet treat that is packed full of protein – Cottage Cheese Chocolate Pudding!!

Disclaimer:

This is a high-protein version of “pudding” in much the same way that there are chia seed “puddings.”  It’s not really going to compare taste or texture-wise to your grandma’s homemade rich and delicious real and true chocolate pudding. But, it is a tasty, thick and creamy high-protein snack.

Prep Time: 10 minutes minutes
Chilling Time:: 2 hours hours
Servings: 4 servings

Equipment

  • 1 food processor or chopper (I use my KitchenAid 7-Cup Food Processor)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups 2 or 4% cottage cheese see note
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup plus more to taste*
  • 5 tablespoons (1/4 cup + 1 tablespoon) cocoa (cacao) powder unsweetened
  • 1/2 cup chocolate protein powder see note

Whipped Cream: Optional for Topping

  • 1/2 cup heavy "whipping" cream
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (or equivalent of powdered sugar substitute)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla pudding mix optional – helps to stay fluffy when making ahead.

Instructions

  • Add cottage cheese to food processor or chopper. Blend until almost smooth.
  • Peel and cut banana into chunks and add to processor along with maple syrup, cocoa powder and protein powder.
  • Process until smooth and well combined.
  • Pour into individual serving containers (if desired.)
  • Chill for at least 2 hours. Store covered in refrigerator for up to 5 days.

To Make Whipped Cream: (optional)

  • Whisk together the cream, powdered sugar and pudding mix (if using) until thick and creamy.

Notes

Protein Powder:

I have used both whey and plant based protein powder.
Isopure Whey chocolate protein powder
Orgain Chocolate Plant Based Protein Powder
Texture may vary depending upon what type (whey or plant based) and brand of protein powder you use.  You may just need to adjust amount to your desired texture.  I tend to like the whey protein texture a little bit more in this recipe.

Cottage Cheese:

Like protein powders, some cottage cheese brands can vary in texture.  I have used the Good Culture and Daisy brands.  If your cottage cheese is thicker or thinner, you may need to adjust amount to your desired texture.

Disclaimer:

This is a high-protein version of “pudding” in much the same way that there are chia seed “puddings.”  It’s not really going to compare taste or texture-wise to your grandma’s homemade rich and delicious real chocolate pudding.
